Who to Call Besides Us

A water emergency in the West Valley usually needs two or three phone calls, and only one of them is to a restoration company. The water utility that can shut off a main, the gas company if you smell gas, the power company if a line is down, the county if the sewer is overflowing in the street. This page is every one of those numbers for every West Valley city, read from the agency’s own page on the date at the bottom.

Life safety first

If someone is hurt, if you smell gas, or if a power line is down in water, call 911 before anything on this page. Everything else can wait sixty seconds.

The West Valley is a string of cities and two private water utilities, and each has its own emergency line. Most of them answer differently after 5 p.m. than during the day, and a few hand you to a different department for sewer than for water. The table is organized the way you will use it: find your city, call the after hours line if it is after hours.

Turn the water off yourself first.

In most houses the shutoff is at the front of the house near a hose bib, on the line coming out of the ground before it enters the wall. The City of Phoenix asks customers not to shut off at the meter. Find your valve on a dry day. The first hour after water damage covers the rest.

Its online maps and the sandbag location map are linked below. Why a house nowhere near water takes on water explains what the zones mean.

Questions

Which number do I call if water is coming up through a floor drain?

That is a sewer problem, and in every West Valley city the lateral from the house to the main is the owner’s responsibility, so the city will check its main and hand the rest back to you. Call the sewer line for your city in the table so they can rule out the main, keep everyone out of the wet rooms, and call us. When drains back up covers the first ten minutes.

The street is a river and my garage is filling. Who do I call?

Nobody can stop the street. Call 911 if anyone is in danger or a car is in moving water, and never drive around a barricade: Arizona’s A.R.S. 28-910 makes a driver who does that liable for the cost of the rescue. Inside the house, cut power to the wet area if you can reach the panel dry, move what you can up, photograph everything, and call us. After the storm, the Flood Control District line above will tell you whether the address is in a mapped floodplain.

My water utility says the leak is on my side of the meter. Now what?

Then it is your line and your repair. Shut off at the house valve, not the meter, call a licensed plumber for the pipe and call us for the water that already got in. If the leak is under the slab, Under the slab explains what you are dealing with.
